The First Week Home

How to Thrive, Not Just Simply Survive, Your First
Week Home With Your Newborn

Most new parents say the first week home with their baby feels like they've entered into The Twilight Zone. Filled with sleepless nights, nervousness, and lots of crying...from everyone involved. But it doesn't have to be this way for you! Read on to learn how I can help you feel confident, knowledgeable, and well-rested so you can actually love and cherish your first few weeks home with your newborn.

After 22 rewarding years of being a doula, it has become very clear to me where we are failing our new parents. It's not pregnancy, labor or the actual birth...it's the first few days and weeks home with their newborns!

The first few weeks with your baby should be a time of joy, exploration, bewilderment, and lots of love and laughs. Instead, I find most of my couples struggle with frustration, exhaustion, and constantly questioning if they're "doing the right things".

Some of the common texts and calls that I get from my clients in the first few days/weeks are:

  • "This wasn't what I thought the first week would be like...I had no idea it would be this intense!"

  • "We didn't realize our baby would want to eat every 1.5-2 hours AROUND THE CLOCK!"

  • "I wish I knew what to tell family and friends when they say they want to help us."

  • "We are both exhausted, barely functioning, and are running on fumes!"

I'm not sharing this all with you to scare you or make you nervous. I'm sharing it with you so that you can have a plan in place and have actual hands-on skills and techniques to use, so that you don't have these same issues and can actually enjoy your first few weeks home with your newborn!

While most newborn care classes taught at hospitals (or as part of your childbirth class) can be helpful, I find they typically teach broad skills like diapering and bathing and provide generalized information on newborns.  Enter the "First Week Home" class! This intensive, 3-hour, in-home course will teach you everything you need to know to make those first few weeks blissful and amazing and leave you with nothing but wonderful, loving memories of getting to know your baby!

A lot of parents-to-be aren't even sure of what topics to ask about, since your baby may not be here yet, and you have never done this before (or maybe you struggled with your first baby and want to ensure a smoother postpartum this time). So no worries if you don't come with a list of 20 questions for me...I promise we'll cover all the necessary topics and you'll leave our call knowing exactly what it would look like if we worked together and what type of skills you'll learn during the course.

3-HOUR, IN-HOME COURSE

This is where the magic happens! We will cover topics such as:

  • What is the "4th trimester" and why it's crucial to understand how to handle it.

  • Newborn soothing techniques such as The Five S's and many other hands-on skills to use when nothing else seems to be working.

  • Feeding with ease (whether breast, bottle, or combo feeding)

*This class is very different from a basic baby care class that you might take at the hospital or through your childbirth class. Let's chat so I can explain how!
